Meribel is in the middle valley of "les trois valleés" in France.
It lies at a height of between 1450m - 1700m, which means that in the winter, the resort is almost 'snow sure'. There are also
snow cannons in the resort for extra surety.
We were very late booking our holiday in 1998 (in fact we only booked it in the January!) which meant that we didn't
have a great choice of destinations or accommodation. I think we were quite lucky in our choice of resort. The runs were plentiful on all
levels, as were the number of lifts.
We actually stayed in a small village below Meribel called Brides-les-Bains. This village wan't exactly humming with après ski activities, so
if you're after heady nightlife - don't stay here! The village had an excellent connection with Meribel via the Olympic Ski Lift. The only disadvantage to this, was that the last
cable car back down to Brides was at 5pm and the queues for it were incredible! The alternative was to take a ski-bus or to take your car up the valley
(20 minutes of winding mountain road which made Matthew sick...) and park in the Municipal Car Park - okay if the roads weren't too snowed up.
In short, a great resort, and if we were to go again would make sure that we stayed in Meribel itself.
